Shopping in your closet! etc.

Okay, this is gonna be a post about breast cancer, breast forms, underwear, but ultimately CLOTHES! So turn back now if you don't want to see any of those things. And yes, I'm leaving this public because, as I've said before, if anything relating to breast cancer can help someone else, it's here.

After I had my partial mastectomy in 2001, I stopped wearing a bra. It just felt tooooo icky and uncomfortable. And with that little change in underwear, I had to think about what kinds of tops I could (legally) wear! That meant things that were dark and opaque. Also I switched to things that were silk, mostly, since I needed the softest fabric possible during my radiation treatments. And I didn't want anything tight or clingy. And later on, when summer came, I went with silk camisole tops.

I didn't have reconstructive surgery, so things have never looked quite right since then. I tried, over the years, getting fitted with a proper mastectomy bra and breast form, but the three different places I went wanted to gear me up in what felt like armor plating and a big heavy full breast form (they had no partial forms). So I gave up. My current breast surgeon once suggested I just get a sports bra and stuff some tissue in where I needed it. But I thought, "Ewwww, tight tight sports bra--no thanks!".

Recently things just haven't been feeling good, so I decided to go looking online for *some* kind of bra. I sent off for some barely-there kind of "bralettes" from a couple amazon.com shops! I ended up with some nice comfortable stretchy T-shirt-like-material-with-Lycra ones in a nice beige colour! And yeah, I did the stuff-the-Kleenex-in--and it works!

So suddenly the camisole tops absolutely do NOT work for me anymore! Too much of the bra is showing. Just ugly! What was I gonna do for new clothes??!?

It so happens I discovered that I had NOT given away all those cute tops I had years ago. They were in storage (read: large plastic bags in the walk-in closet). It was like shopping and paying NOTHING! Like an early Christmas present! So yesterday Bunnicula helped me go through bags and bags of clothes (out-of-season stuff, stuff that doesn't fit at the moment, stuff I can't bear to part with, etc.), then we did three loads of laundry. I say we because he does the up-and-down-the-stairs and actual washing machine part; I do the hang everything up on hangers on the shower rod and another rod in the back to dry--most of my clothes never see the dryer--they'd shrink horribly.

Wow, I feel rich! And I can wear WHITE TOPS again! Yay!
