The arts and real life

We just finished watching the movie "The Painted Veil" starring Greta Garbo, Herbert Marshall, and George Brent. Very moving. Upsetting too.

In that: must the woman who "strays" always "see the error of her ways" and realize that she was selfish and on and on? Or worse, must she come to some bad end? In other words, are movies and plays and books always morality plays? Are they just to keep us all (especially women) in line?

Or are they real and those of us who can't live up to certain standards just not good people?

::sigh:: I *should* have just enjoyed it for the sheer pleasure of watching Garbo.
